Brown roots indicate oxidative damage from pythium infection, salt accumulation, or oxygen deprivation. The browning is cellular death and membrane oxidation O_O the root hair coverage disappears because the cells producing them are no longer viable.

Slimy roots indicate bacterial or oomycete infection. The slime is biofilm produced by pathogenic organisms colonizing damaged root tissue. Once present it spreads rapidly through the root zone.
In fabric pots, root health can be partially assessed by examining roots that air prune at the pot surface 😀 these should be white and firm.
In clear containers O_o never use these for mature grows but useful for observation O_O root health is directly visible. Using clear pots isn’t recommended for most standard houseplants because constant light exposure disrupts natural root development.
The most reliable non-destructive assessment is smell. Funny enough :’D
Healthy root zones smell like fresh, earthy soil and that clean scent produced in part by geosmin, a compound made by beneficial Streptomyces bacteria.

Unhealthy root zones smell like rot, sulfur, or stagnant water.
Your nose knows before your eyes do. If you’ve never smelled your root zone, you might be a rookie. Go on, get your nose in there. It’s like a dirt perfume test. Just try to look professional when you do it.
I honestly thought it was a joke when I first heard you could use smell to check root health o_O I was like, “No way!” But after double checking a bunch of sources, it turns out it’s 100% legit. Seriously, I LOVE GROWING!
