The shoot apex constantly produces auxin and pumps it downward through the stem. This happens through polar auxin transport, where PIN-FORMED proteins embedded in cell membranes create directional channels that move auxin in a steady downward flow. As long as that auxin gradient stays high, it actively suppresses the outgrowth of lateral buds below. That’s apical dominance in action O_o the main stem stays in charge because the hormonal signal tells everything underneath it to stay quiet.
When you top, you remove the main source of that auxin. Auxin levels drop in the stem below the cut, the directional transport gets disrupted, and the suppression lifts. The lateral buds are now free to respond to cytokinins coming up from the roots, and they start growing. The plant isn’t vaguely “deciding” to branch because the top is gone/ the specific auxin signal that was actively holding those buds back has been cut off.
This is also why timing and technique matter. Top too early, too aggressively, or during high stress and you can trigger extra ethylene and defensive responses before the hormonal system stabilizes. Do it cleanly at the right stage and the plant reallocates its resources exactly the way the system is designed to work. You’re not just shaping the plant by cutting it. You’re interrupting a transport network that’s been running nonstop, and the plant responds by activating the branches it was previously told to keep dormant.
