When you LST, defoliate, or hit the canopy with strong fans, you’re mechanically stressing the plant at the cellular level. This activates mechanosensitive ion channels in the cell membranes. These channels basically act like little pressure sensors. Once they open, calcium floods into the cytoplasm within seconds. That calcium spike is the plant’s early warning system.
From there it turns on touch inducible genes O_o the TCH family and their cannabis versions. These genes help kickstart a whole chain of responses. One of the big ones is increased ethylene production. Ethylene then works together with jasmonic acid to change how the plant grows. Instead of letting cells stretch out vertically, it slows elongation and pushes the plant to expand radially while depositing more lignin into the cell walls.
Lignin is what makes plant tissue woody and rigid. So the plant isn’t just getting shorter and thicker for no reason. It’s reading the repeated mechanical stress as “something keeps brushing or pushing against me” and responding by reinforcing its structure exactly where it needs it most. Stems get woodier, branches get stronger, and the whole architecture shifts to better support heavy flowers later on.
This is why steady, gentle daily training usually beats one rough session. When you stress the plant consistently but not violently, it has time to properly lay down reinforcement in the cell walls and vascular tissue. One aggressive session often just triggers a quick defensive reaction instead of actual structural improvement. Your hands-on work is basically resistance training at the cellular level. The plant’s out here getting stronger and more resilient while you’re just trying to keep the canopy even.
It’s kind of funny when you think about it. You touch the plant to control its shape, and the plant uses that same touch as a signal to build a tougher version of itself.
