When a spider mite pierces a leaf cell, two things happen at the same time in the surrounding tissue.

First, damaged cell membranes dump fatty acids (specifically alpha-linolenic acid) into the neighboring cells.

Enzymes called lipoxygenases jump on them immediately and start churning out jasmonic acid precursors within minutes.

Jasmonic acid then floods through the phloem like a plant-wide emergency broadcast, turning on defense genes in tissue that hasn’t even been touched yet.

Those genes crank out proteinase inhibitors that basically ruin the bug’s dinner plans 😀 every time it eats, it gets less nutrition and more stomach problems.

Other genes fire up terpene synthases, pumping out defensive volatile compounds that mess with the pest’s sense of direction. And cell wall reinforcement genes start laying down callose like the plant is building tiny riot shields before the invaders even show up.

Second, the plant doesn’t just react to “something touched me.” It actually reads the pest’s saliva. Specific compounds in that saliva act like molecular name tags. Spider mite saliva triggers one set of defenses. Thrips saliva triggers a different set.

It’s like the plant is running its own CSI lab, analyzing the bug’s “DNA” before you’ve even spotted the first little stipple mark.

By the time you notice anything on the leaf, the defense response has already been active for hours O_O sometimes days. Your plant was out here fighting back while you were still Doom scrolling in the toiler…

The visible damage is always late to the party. The real fight started at the molecular level the second that first cell got pierced. Isn’t that pretty crazy?
